Saying Freedom, the new book by Jonathan Franzen, is great at this point is kind of like hyping the Beatles, but I don't care. It was great. Funny, sad, poignant, challenging, thoughtful. All of the above and more. Really, really, really highly recommended to any looking for a great book to read over these cold winter months.

Nothing warms your heart like stories about how well the financial industry is doing after strong arming our politicians into succumbing to their every wish. The money quotes, when taken together as seen below, make my blood boil:
Awesome. Read the whole story HERE.
The last two years have been the best ever for combined investment-banking and
trading revenue at Bank of America Corp., JPMorgan Chase & Co., Citigroup, Goldman Sachs Group Inc. and Morgan Stanley, according to data compiled by Bloomberg.
The U.S. government, promising to make the system safer, buckled under many of the financial industry’s protests. Lawmakers spurned changes that would wall off
deposit-taking banks from riskier trading. They declined to limit the size of
lenders or ban any form of derivatives. Higher capital and liquidity requirements agreed to by regulators worldwide have been delayed for years to aid economic recovery.
Awesome. Read the whole story HERE.

While it wasn't my favorite Coen Brothers film, True Grit was pretty solid, as is expected from the talented brothers. Fans going into the movie expecting the action and wild west craziness of No Country for Old Men will be disappointed, but within the right expectations (a campy, funny western) this is a movie that is highly recommended.

Don't have much to say about DADT, the failed policy that finally was repealed this last weekend, other than it is about time. I really believe in 50 years people will look back at this hateful law and wonder how we treated people this way and listen to the arguments against letting certain human beings risk their life for our country and shake their heads in disbelief.

We lost a true musical legend over the weekend. If you aren't familiar with the wild, crazed howls of Captain Beefheart, do yourself a favor and check him out. Above is a video of a song from his debut album Safe as Milk with his Magic Band, which proceeded his stone cold classic album Trout Mask Replica. I'm pretty sure there isn't life after death, but if there is, I want to go wherever Don Van Vliet is.

The USA Today has a story today about the letters "Santa" is getting this year. Needless to say, when kids ask for no presents and that their Mom needs a winter coat, things are rough. Luckily, in the spirit of the American Dream and being a fair society, people making over $250,000 a year will get a tax break. Thank god. If making sure the richest amongst us don't see their rates go back up 3% to their old rates while others are literally with nothing isn't the Christmas Spirit, I don't know what it.

It would have been cataclysmic if Emmer had control over two Republican chambers of the legislature, so Dayton's victory is even more important and exciting. What it means is that the next two years will be more grinding and a lot won't get done, but at least it put up a blocker to what would have been really bad for a whole lot of people.

There is a rally tonight to bring people together after the events in Powderhorn Park this last weekend. The women who was assaulted is calling for people to come out and support the neighborhood, which is a pretty courageous thing to do. Read more at MPR and if you live in the Twin Cities come out and show your support for our great parks and our great city.
