Minnesota

Remember six weeks back it seemed like the sky was the limit for MN sports teams? The Twins looked poised to go deep into the playoffs, the Vikings had a stacked lineup that everyone thought would make a run for Dallas and the Wild had the potential of a new season ahead of them? Man, that seems like a million years ago.

Costume Advice

If you haven't bought your costumers for your excursions tonight or tomorrow, here is a list of "sexy" costumes you should most definitely avoid.

No mas Law School

I think my failed attempt at going to Law School might have been the best thing that ever happened to me. Reading this article about how hard it is right now for Law School graduates to find jobs, especially after accumulating six figure debt. Yikes.

Chelsea Boys Review

Read a review of the new album by local electro dance rockers Chelsea Boys over at Reviler. Another solid local release for the year, this one a short burst of manic energy that really grew on me.

Kraftwerk Cover

Check out a band I had never heard of (and probably won't ever hear of again) covering the classic Kraftwerk song "Pocket Calculator" over at Reviler.

Deerhunter

Read a Four Two Takes on the amazing new Deerhunter album Halcyn Digest over at Reviler. It is amazing, but Bradford Cox and company just keep getting better and better.

Holy Fuck + Cats

I don't usually re post videos from Reviler, but this one is too good not to. The music video for the track "Red Lights" from the latest Holy Fuck album Latin features only cats....and it is awesome. This one especially goes out to our awesome new cat Iggy, who we adopted last week, I am going to play him Holy Fuck music and see if that leads him on an adventure.

Things that are cool slowed down

Tempus II from Philip Heron on Vimeo.

Check out this video of slow being broken at a verrrrrrry slow pace. It is super awesome and highly recommended as a good way to start your day. I especially liked the orange being crushed and the guys hands as they hit the bricks. Crazy.

Cults + Daytrotter

Head over to Reviler to check out the solid Cults playing the always amazing Daytrotter website HERE.

Cee Lo

Check out the latest Cee Lo song from his upcoming Lady Killer LP, out in a few weeks.

Bad Kids

I'm not a huge WaPost fan, but they had a good op-ed article about "kids these days" (*shaking fist at kids on the front lawn*). While it may qualify me as officially "old" (I sure feel it), I think the article has some real, legit points.

(For those of you who don't care about the Washington Post or kids in general, below is a video for the super awesome Black Lips song "Bad Kids"....enjoy!)

Grant Cutler

Grant Cutler, best known recently for his work with the now defunct Lookbook, is back with his first solo work under the name Grant Cutler and the Gorgeous Lords. The material is darker and more mellow than Lookbook and probably won't find quite as receptive of an audience as his recently disbanded group. Read a whole review and listen to a track over at Reviler.

Brett Farve is a b...

Yikes, pretty brutal article from the sports tabloid Deadspin. Man, he really doesn't like Brett. I kind of agreed but then read Farve had two fractures in his ankle, which does sound pretty f'ing painful. I am half expecting him to roll out in a motorized wheelchair for the game next Sunday.

Gorillaz Live

Read my review of the really fun Gorillaz show from last Sunday at the Target Center over at Reviler.

Wellstone

Paul Wellstone died 8 years ago today. So, so very sad. I remember the day he died and feeling very sad, even though I was much less politically involved than I am now. Even eight years on, the memory of Wellstone hangs heavy over Minnesota and progressive politics. Read one of my favorite political writers, Ezra Klein, and what he had to say on the five year anniversary of his death.

Obama

We tried to see Obama on Saturday, but it was too full and and the overflow (watching it on a big screen), seemed underwhelming. By all accounts, it seemed like a great rally and showed why we have (and continue) to support him. Although I get frustrated with his slow pace on some things, evidence like the video above (Obama taking part in Dan Savages awesome It Gets Better Campaign) help you remember that he is doing the right thing and if given time, I still believe he will make things better, even if it seems like it is too slow.

Japandroids + Walkmen

Another review from another awesome show from last weekend. This time it was the great double bill of Japandroids and The Walkmen at the Cabooze. Read my review, see some vids and check out my friend Austins great photos HERE.

Sufjan Stevens Live

Read my review of the awesome Sufjan Stevens show at the Orpheum from last weekend over at Reviler. Really, it was awesome.

Apologies

Hopefully this picture makes up for the slow day today (Thursday) and the probably slow day tomorrow (Friday). I think it does.

Twin Sister

Listen to a new Twin Sister jam Meet the Frownies and watch a video of how they made it over at Reviler.

Guided By Voices

Read my review of the really great Guided By Voices classic, 93-96 lineup show at First Avenue last week and check out my vids and Adam's pics. Good stuff.

The Rent is Too Damn High Party

For those of you who haven't seen this guy, his name is Jimmy McMillian and he is running for Governor of New York under the banner of his own partner, names the Rent is Too Damn High Party. See his crazy website HERE, read his ringing endorsement from the American Mustache Institute HERE and vote for him if you live in New York.

A Place to Bury Strangers x David Bowie

Check out one of the loudest, fuzziest bands covering the Thin White Duke himself over at Reviler. I didn't see it coming, but their cover of "Suffragette City" sounds just about right.

Leisure Birds

Check out my review of the new album Copper Scroll from up and coming local band Leisure Birds over at Reviler.

Bill Maher

Bill Maher nails it. Both funny, relevant and topical.

Food Pyramid

Another day, another great new local release. The latest is the debut tape from local electronic 3 piece Food Pyramid, who released their debut tape, titled I, on Moon Glyph recently. Check out my review over at Reviler.

Definitive MN Playlist

Head over to Reviler to see my to see Definitive MN Playlist, which finds me picking 10 of my favorite local tracks. If you don't like mine, check out one of the other three lists also up on the site.

Great Weekend

Although I could use a relaxing weekend, it is going to be busy. Lots and lots of great concerts, so hopefully I have the energy to make it to all of them. Tonight is Walkmen/Japandroids at the Cabooze and possibly the first show at the new Stanley's in Northeast (feat. Gospel Gossip). Tomorrow is Sufjan Stevens and the awesome Leisure Birds LP release show (with Marijuana Death Squads, Vampire Hands and Daughters of the Sun). Sunday night, if I am still standing, will be Peelander Z at the Turf Club. Should be fun.

LCD Soundsystem

Check out LCD Soundsystem covering Carl Craig, an (apparently) influential house dj from back in the day. Either way, James Murphy is a personal hero of mine and although this isn't my favorite thing he has done, it still is cool. I can't wait for next Saturday, with LCD and Hot Chip together at Roy Wilkins for what should be one of the most fun shows of the year.

Flying Lotus

Read a Reviler four takes on the great new Flying Lotus EP Pattern + Grid EP up now. Pretty much universal acclaim on this one. Just really great stuff.

Wild!

The Wild start their home season tonight with their first game on American soil at the X versus the Edmonton Oilers. Their first two games (a regulation loss and a overtime loss to Carolina in Finland) weren't the best, but the team should be at least decent this year, so I am hoping/expecting for at least competitive games. Lets go!

Impeachment

Jonathan Chait over at The New Republic argues that if (when) the Republicans win the House and if (when) Obama wins re-election in 2012, he will be impeached. As Chait says, it doesn't really matter what for, but enough people have already said they will that it almost is a forgone conclusion. Not that it matters, since the Senate won't, but still, I have a feeling it is going to be an even uglier couple of years ahead.

Dark Dark Dark

Head over to Reviler to check out some really great sessions (from MPLS.TV, yourstr.ly and Daytrotter) from local upstarts Dark Dark Dark.

Avey Tare

Lucky 1 from Abby Portner on Vimeo.

Check out the first song from Animal Collective singer Avey Tare's upcoming solo joint Down There. Grab the MP3 over at Reviler. Won't be as big as Panda Bear's upcoming album, but still cool stuff.

Velvet Davenport

Another song from Velvet Davenports soon to drop (and then explode into the indieverse) LP Warmy Girls has just been premiered by Radio K. The track, "Warmy Personal Routine," can be heard over at Reviler and is another pysch-pop nugget that is keeping everyone excited for the final product.

Cee Lo "Fuck You"

Watch Cee Lo Green, backed by an all female band, playing my favorite song of the year in the video above. As a side note, in the Reviler post, I noted it must be nice to live overseas where adults, watching a late night TV show, are treated like adults and allowed to hear big bad "swears," which the American public is obviously not ready to do.

MN Sports

It is weeks like this that make me glad I am not a life/death sports fan like I used to be. It has been a pretty rough week for MN teams. Vikings get Moss only to play like garbage, the Twins get swept and the Wild start off losing their first two games. Right now the Timberwolves are the area's most successful team...ahhhh! For those of you who are centered around the sporting universe, my sympathy is with you, but I will say it is nice to have other hobbies to focus attention on when teams seem to be constant disappointments.

Religion

I have been chewing over (and telling everyone about) this study that came out last week that found that non believers actually know more about religion than believers. Interesting.

Firefighters

So hopefully this story helps to illustrate why Libertarian theory is wrong.

Blank Dogs

Check out the new song "Northern Islands" by Blank Dogs over at Reviler.

King Khan

I told people to go to King Khan last week, and have video and words to prove why you should have gone over at Reviler. Needless to say, it was awesome.

Games EP

Check out my review of the excellent new EP That We Can Play by electronic artist Games over at Reviler. Highly recommended.

Depressing

What a letdown.

Traffique

Check out my review of the new album Traffique's Endless Weekend Mixtape over at Reviler. The group is a side project of Red Hunter, best know as Peter and the Wolf. Traffique is much glammier and funky than his usual DIY folk, but equally as good.

Tame Impala

Tame Impala, whose debut is one of my favorite discoveries of this year, will finally be coming to the Twin Cities on Sat, Nov 27th, which is awesome. Head over to Reviler to check out the latest video that was made to support Innerspeaker.

TWINS!!!

Big game tonight. Luckily for the Twins, I will be there with my lucky hat and T-shirt on (the ones I wore for the Thome walk off home run game), so I am liking their chances. While winning game 1 would have been huge, they at least got to CC and made him use a lot of pitches, so when he comes back on 3 days rest for game 4 facing a fresh Nick Blackburn, we know we can tag him. Tonight is another chance for Pavano to stick his thumb in the nose of the Yankees against grandpa Pettite. Lets go Twins!

Gayngs

Local supergroup Gayngs shot a video for local video superstars MPLT.TV and recorded a session for national superstars Daytrotter last week. Check out both over at Reviler.

Chill Wave Band Names

The chill wave genre, which for the time being is still the most trendy of all "indie" genres around, seems to find a new band practicing its sounds every day. Thinking about starting one of your own? Use the Chill Wave Band Name generator HERE and you will be on your way to being the next Neon Indian!

Crocodiles

Check out the Reviler four takes on the new Crocodiles album Sleep Forever over at Reviler. I liked the album along with one other guy, but the two others really did not.

Free Mixtapes

Head over to Reviler to find two mixtapes from electronic artist CFCF HERE.

Beat the Yankees!

Not that we need any more reasons to hate the Yankees and beat them in the ALDS, but this newspaper sums up the smugness that we hate so very much about the boys in pinstripes. Lets go Twins!

Sufjan Stevens

Indie kids have waited with baited breath for years, since Illinoise, for Sufjan to release a new LP. That wait is over. Check out 4 pretty glowing reviews of The Age of Adz as part of our Reviler 4 Takes.

The Girl Who Kicked the Hornets Nest

Just got done reading the third book in the Millennium series, and it may have been my favorite of the three. When I started reading the books, I sheepishly thought they were on par with Dan Brown's books, but I have to say that Stieg Larsson's books were some of the more engaging, page turning books I have read in a while, all without feeling like it was made for mass consumption, like Brown's work had the tendency to do. Good stuff.

Cariobu Live

Check out some videos and my review, along with a link to a full photo set from Meredith Westin, from last wLinkeeks excellent set by Caribou at the First Avenue Mainroom over at Reviler.

Monday, October 4, 2010

King Khan

Very late notice, but if you have no plans tonight, you should head to the Triple Rock Social Club for King Khan and the Shrines....you won't be disappointed. Photo and video coverage, plus a review, should be up on Reviler in short order.

Fresh and Onlys

Check out the Reviler Four Takes on the new album Play it Strange from The Fresh and Onlys, who are one of the more under appreciated groups around right now. I am very excited for their show on Nov. 11 with Clinic at the 7th Street Entry, which will definitely be one of the best shows this fall.

Global Rich List

Everyone thinks they are underpaid, but if you want a stiff reality check, head over to Global Rich List and type in your yearly salary. Chances are, your salary puts you in the top 10 percent of incomes in the entire world, if not higher. No more complaining, we are a very lucky for what we have.

Marnie Stern Four Takes

Read Four Takes on the new, self titled album by indie guitar shredder Marnie Stern over at Reviler. I personally enjoyed the album, as did two of the other reviewers, but there was one dissenting opinion, which is the nice part about Four Takes.
