Free White Denim Album

Head over to Reviler to grab the new album, Last Day of Summer, from the dexterous Austin band White Denim. Their last album, Fits, is still amazing me, so don't sleep on this record.

Soft Pack

Listen to the new, 6 minute long garage rock jam from Soft Pack, who released a really great, and highly unrated, self titled debut album earlier this year. Hear "Gagdad" over at Reviler.

GBV

Listen to Eternal Summers covering the Guided By Voices classis track "A Salty Salute" over at Reviler.

Society

I had a "whats wrong with society" moment the other day when I pulled up behind a car with a "My Other Ride is Your Mom" license plate cover. Really, what motivates you to buy that?

The Baseball Project

Listen to the new song "Don't Call Them Twinkies" from The Baseball Project, featuring the words and vocals of Craig Finn, over at Reviler. If you aren't a Twins fan, don't even try.

Marissa Nadler

Check out my Reviler review of the really great album Covers Vol. 1 from female songstress Marissa Nadler. She covers songs ranging from Radiohead to Townes Van Zant on this subdued but rousing album.

Girl Talk

Watch a short documentary (part one is above) from Girl Talks New Year Eve show in Chicago, which featured a fully build house on stage. Awesome.

We are fat...and getting fatter

At least we are #1 in something, right? I think that as long as these numbers are trending upwards, we will become a world awash in debt from health care costs of taking care of fat people who aren't taking care of themselves.

The Clientele

Read the Reviler four takes on the new Clientele EP Minotaur. Differing opinions on the album, which is always fun to read.

Flaming Lips Live

Read my live review and check out some videos of the Flaming Lips/Ariel Pinks Haunted Graffiti show at Roy Wilkins last week over at Reviler.

Dexter Season 5 starts tonight, and even though I don't have Showtime, I can't wait. Check out the season preview above....should be great.

Sid Hartman should quit

I think Sid Hartman, at this point in his career, is a worthless "reporter." His columns are poorly written cheers for the local teams, with his tone deaf, blind support of teams and players being presented somehow as "news." With that said, I thought this video of Sid arguing with his boss on video about whether the 0-2 Vikings are struggling was hilarious. "I'm in the locker room more than you...nah nah nah" is what I heard. For being like 200 years old he is kind of a baby.

National Bird

Read my review of the new EP The Rhythm of Our Science by local group National Bird over at Reviler.

Gayngs

Check out a new Gayngs song (a George Michael cover featuring Har Mar Superstar) and a live video from their show at the First Ave Mainroom a while back up now at Reviler.

You Tube Time Travel

Check out this cool site that lets you pick a year and it shows you videos (from sports, music, movies, etc) that are from that year pulled from You Tube. Kind of like an entertainment time machine. Click HERE and proceed to waste lots of time.

Live Videos

Enjoy the sites and sounds from last Sundays excellent Pavement show above. To see others, including some from Velvet Davenport, No Age and another from Pavement, over at Reviler.

Radio Dept

Listen to the cool new song "The New Improved Hypocrisy" by Swedish pop band Radio Dept over at Reviler. The song was a tune against the Centre-Right Government that was up for elections on Sunday. Unfortunately for the band, the government was re-elected, but we at least got a solid song out of the deal.

Homer Hanky

Man, I am getting pumped for the playoffs! Two more weeks....

Beach Fossils

If asked the record I have enjoyed the most that has stayed under the radar in 2010, my choice would probably be the breezy, self titled debut album by Beach Fossils. If you missed their album, go check it out, and head over to Reviler to hear two of their new songs that were just released.

Japandroids

Listen to the pummeling new single "Heavenward Grand Prix" from Japandroids ongoing 7" series over at Reviler.

Jim Thome/Division Champs!

I thought it was cool that Jim Thome (and the Twins) had a nice write up in the Sunday New York Times, but it pales in comparison to the awesome new cover of Sports Illustrated. With the Twins clinching the AL Central last night much earlier than the last few times they have snuck into the playoffs, we should have plenty of time to prepare and rest to take on the Yankees or the Rays. Go Twins!

Time Magazine

The Onion FOR THE WIN!
TIME Announces New Version Of Magazine Aimed At Adults

The Walkmen

Looking for some breezy but really great indie rock for this fall? I would suggest you give The Walkmen's latest LP Lisbon a run through. It is sad, pretty, melodic, rough around the edges, understated and emotional. Good stuff. Read four takes on the record HERE.

Antony and the Johnsons

We review the new Antony and the Johnsons EP Thank You For Your Love over at Reviler. We didn't give it much love.

Diet Coke

I knew there was a reason I liked Diet Coke so much.

Estate

Listen to the new bouncy, dance driven track by local electronic artists Estate over at Reviler.

Abe Vigoda

Listen to the new track "To Tears" from tropical punk band Abe Vigoda over at Reviler. The sound on the track is different and more sharply produced than their previous work, but like everything they have done, it is a pretty solid track.

David Cross is great. The last third pretty much sums up the current political discourse.

Guante and Big Cats! Mixtape

Head over to Reviler to check out a great new mixtape from one of the very best rapper/producer teams in the cities, Gaunte and Big Cats!. The record is more loose and fun than their fairly heavy debut record, which is fun to hear.

The Big Short

I just returned the second book in as many weeks that I had to bring back half read because I couldn't get to it before my three weeks was up. This one, The Big Short, was about the financial crisis and was seemingly just as good as the last half read book (Hitch 22) that I couldn't finish. Both are being put back on the list for reading down the road. The Big Short is a book by Michael Lewis which covers the main players behind the scenes that saw the housing crash coming and made a ton of money by creating and exploiting credit default swaps. It was a fairly easy and well thought out read (like all Lewis books are said to be) and was very interesting. There were a few terms I had to look up what they meant, but Lewis writes in such an engaging style that it was hard not to be interested in the subject. If the back 60% is as good as the front 40%, this is an excellent book that is highly recommended....just get in line behind me at the library if you are going to check it out.

Screaming Females

Read the Reviler Four Takes on the guitar heroics of the new Screaming Females album Castle Talk over at Reviler.

Do you like your music electro-y, dance-y, and local-y? Claps might be your band. Check out my review of their new EP No Party.

Teenage Moods

Check out the track "Grunge Bird" from local lo-fi band Teenage Moods over at Reviler.

Velvet Davenport

Local pysch-pop group Velvet Davenport are the next big thing out of Minneapolis, with lots of national blogs taking notice of their upcoming LP Warmy Girls. We at Reviler were lucky enough to debut the first track from the album, the jangly "Mystery Michael." Check it out over at Reviler and see what all the hype is/will be about.

Picked to Click

Picked to Click is upon us, so we at Reviler picked the local bands we thought should win the award. Check out our choices HERE.

Facebook

As a longtime foe of all things Facebook, I couldn't help be feel a smug sense of self satisfaction reading this post about how a study found that heavy facebook users have stronger tendencies towards narcissism than those who don't. They define this as "a pervasive pattern of grandiosity, need for admiration, and an exaggerated sense of self-importance," which pretty much sums up to me what I feel like people on facebook exhibit. (This goes for Twitter too) I just think we have gotten to the point where people are convinced their normal, boring lives are something interesting and feel the need to constantly tell people all of the great things they are doing. The whole world would benefit from a small dose of reality in realizing that pictures from you getting drunk at some bar this weekend or your cat in a Halloween costume just really aren't that relevant to anyone other than you.

Fools Gold Remix Free Energy

I have a healthy skepticism around remixes, but I couldn't resist listening to, and enjoying, one band I really like remixing a great song from another band I really like. Head over to Reviler to check out Fool's Gold remixing "Bang Pop" from Free Energy's debut record Stuck on Nothing.

Dreamend

Listen to the track "Magnesium Light" from Black Moth Super Rainbow member Dreamend up now at Reviler.

Shit Robot

In addition to having an awesome band name, Shit Robot also score big points with the name of their debut album, From the Cradle to the Rave. Read more about this pretty great indie/electro dance group (and find out about their actual music) and hear a track over at Reviler.

Hipsters

I was called a hipster last night. In my defense, I would like to say that this video does a good job of showing what hipsters are like, and I am fairly certain I am not like these people....at least I hope I'm not.

No Age

Listen to the glammy new song "Glitter" from No Age from their upcoming Everything In Between album up now at Reviler. We also have a Four Takes of the whole album up today.

This guy is pumped up. So, so, so very awesome. Too bad he didn't win, he is speech gold.

Vikings

So there is a football game tonight or something? Is that what I hear? I kid, I kid. Go Vikings, yadda, yadda yadda.

Prince Rama

Prince Rama are a band on the Paw Tracks label, which is run by the guys from Animal Collective, who also produce the new Prince Rama Record Shadow Temple. Not surprisingly, it is wild, uninhibited, tribal drummed freak folk, just like old school Animal Collective. We did four takes on the album over at Reviler.

Wildfires

I didn't even realize there were wildfires in Colorado right now until I saw this video of timelapse photos. It is amazing how destruction from a distance can seem so beautiful, even though you know it is agonizingly awful for those involved. Hopefully they can contain it soon and everyone in its path are safe.

S. Carey

Above is a video from the S. Carey in-store at the Electric Fetus. If you like, the other is over at Reviler. If you haven't checked out his debut album All We Grow, you should, it is pretty good.

Megafaun

Read our Four Takes review of the new album Heretofore by the always great Megafaun. I still think of their show with a then unknown Bon Iver at the old Uptown Bar a few years back and remember how cool it was. Little did I know how big both would become in just a few years.

Todd Margaret

Watch the trailer above for the new show The Increasingly Bad Decisions of Todd Margaret, featuring Will Arnett and David Cross, whom you should know from one of the very best comedies ever (Arrested Development). The show comes out on IFC on Oct 1st, so if someone has whatever channel IFC is, invite me over.

A Sunny Day in Glasgow

Check out the great new song "Drink, Drank, Drunk" from A Sunny Day in Glasgow over at Reviler. Like everything from the group, it is really good.

Graham O'Brien

Head over to Reviler to check out my review of the new album Live Drums from local artist Graham O'Brien. The album is a cool mix of DJ Shadow like grooves and some hip hop beats with support from some of O'Brien friends in the local rap scene (O'Brien is the drummer for No Bird Sing).

Hitch 22

I would recommend Hitch 22, the new memoir by the writer Christopher Hitchens, as much as one can recommend a book they did not finish. It wasn't for lack of interest that I didn't finish the book, but the fact that the library demanded it back with the threat to charge me daily for keeping it. Saying Hitchens is an interesting character (he has been both a card carrying socialist and a neo-con) would due this massive man justice. No matter whether you agree with his stands (his hard core atheism is the hardest pill for many to swallow), it is hard to turn your eyes when a writer with this much talent writes a book like Hitch 22. Now I just have to get back on the list to get it again so I can finish the book.

Tallgrass Beer

Finally got my hands on Tallgrass Beer that I was able to bring along and enjoy this weekend. The beer, new to the Twin Cities and brewed in Kansas, is packaged in 16oz cans (like Surely) and from the two beers I had (the Buffalo Sweat Stout and the IPA) pretty great stuff. I would especially recommend the Stout, but I may be biased as Stouts are my favorite type of beer. I was able to find it with the craft brews at our local liquor store, so if you are a hop head I would recommend giving Tallgrass a whirl.

Interpol

Head over to Reviler to read a Four Takes on the new, self titled Interpol record. General consensus? "Meh."
