Antlers free EP

Head over to Reviler to check out a new video (for Sylvia) and grab a new EP from the always great Antlers.

Best Coast "When I'm With You Video"

Didn't think I could like this song more than I did before, but this video may make that happen. Great stuff.

Original Post at Reviler

The grass is always greener....

This video, of a legitimate fight in the Ukrainian Parliament, makes our legislative bodies look pretty damn civil.

Dada Trash Collage "In Season"

Listen to the swirling Animal Collective esqe sound of local noisemaker Dada Trash Collage with his latest track "In Season" from his upcoming Neighbors LP over at Reviler. I just got the hand made CD in the mail and am looking forward to some great summer music when I finally get a chance to listen to the record.

Yep

Poison Control Center "Being Gone"

Head over to Reviler to hear the first song, "Being Gone," from their upcoming Sad Sour Future LP. I will be reviewing the whole disc, which is awesome, in the very near future.

Dum Dum Girls I Will Be Review

Head over to Reviler to check out my review of the excellent new full length I Will Be from female led garage rockers Dum Dum Girls. Hopefully the group will come through the Twin Cities soon as I have wanted to see them live for quite some time now.

Hipster Cat

Originally posted over at Reviler by Jon, I am re posting it because I think it is so awesome.

Dr. Dog 4 Takes

Check out my opinion, along with three others, on Dr. Dog's latest album Shame, Shame as part of our 4 takes series over at Reviler.

Inspiring Story

Nicholas Kristof is one of my favorite columnists for the New York Times, and his Sunday columns are always poignant and powerful and a good reminder of the real suffering happening in the world. His column from this last Sunday may have been my favorite yet, with focusing on Dave Eggers new book What is the What and a new school that is now running in South Sudan. Once you have read the article, head over to the schools website HERE and donate money if you can.

Flying Lotus Cosmogramma 4 Takes

Check out 4 different takes on the crazy/good new album Cosmogramma by LA producer Flying Lotus over at Reviler.

White Hinterland

Check out a few songs from up and coming female singer/songwriter White Hinterland over at Reviler. I got to check her out live when she opened for Dosh at the Bedlam, and while she was good, her live recordings still win out at this point in time.

Up in the Air

While the movie wasn't half bad, I had been led to believe it was less of a romantic comedy than it turned out to be. I dug the social commentary about our cut throat capitalist system (it was written by the guy from Thank You for Smoking), but I thought in the end it followed a few too many of the rules. Even with the not storybook ending, I came away wishing it had been just a little bit different. Oh Well.

Maybe it's a guy thing...

...but this is super awesome.

Amazing Video

The White Mountain from charles on Vimeo.

I really am blown away by videos like this.

Thee Oh Sees "I Was Denied"

Check out the amazing new garage rock track "I Was Denied" by Bay area veterans Thee Oh See, who release a new album every few days or so it seems like. Their latest, Warm Slime, is out now.

Muja Messiah "Bobby's Angels"

Check out the banging new track "Bobby's Angels" from local rapper Muja Messiah over at Reviler. The track is taken from the The Grind Season Go-Getters Vol.1 Mixtape that features quite a few local hip hop artists and is well worth checking out.

Grand Old Day

The weather is getting nicer, so you know what that means....outdoor concerts! One of my absolute favorite parts of summer is seeing local music outdoors while drinking some cold (local) beers, so seeing lineups starting to be released reminded me that the warm days are just aroud the corner. Jon posted the lineup for Grand Old Day (June 6th) over at Reviler, and it looks pretty awesome. Check it out HERE.

Best Baseball Play Ever

What a play.

Funny Because It's True

Blank Dogs "Heat and Depression"

Read my review of the new song from fuzz rocker Blank Dogs. The first song from their follow up to the excellent Under and Under is the underwhelming "Heat and Depression," which changes up their sound and hopefully isn't indicative of their whole new record.

In Tall Buildings

Check out a song from Nomo side project In Tall Buildings over at Reviler. Just a fair warning for Nomo fans....it sounds nothing like Nomo, but still is not too bad.

Plants and Animals La La Land

Head over to Reviler to read my review of the excellent new Plants and Animals record La La Land. If you like it, make sure to come to their show next Monday at the Varsity Theatre.

Wednesday, April 21, 2010

Ariel Pink "Round and Round"

Check out the fractured pop of Ariel Pink with the song "Round and Round" up now at Reviler.

Beach House at the Cedar

Check out Jon's awesome pics from the Beach House show at the Cedar a few weeks back up now at Reviler. What a great band, what a great new CD (Teen Dream, one of 2010's very best) and what a great show. Really glad that this band is getting the attention they deserve.

Woo Hoo!

Curb Your Enthusiasm will be back for Season 8!

Black Lips at Varsity Theatre

Check out Adams pics and my words + videos for the always awesome Black Lips show at the Varsity Theatre a little while back. For a good representation of the show, check out the 29 second mark and see the groups manager come running from the side and stage dive. He then proceed to through a half full can of beer at the crowd off camera. Good times.

I Want a Lego House

This women loves America more than you...

Too Much

I am a baseball fan and all, but a game lasting 6 hours spread out over 20 innings sounds like torture even to me. The Mets/Cardinals game went so long that they ended up having to have players pitch, which I think should serve as the official cut off point for a regular season games. I know no one likes ties, but I also don't think anyone really likes a 2-1 game that lasts longer than 2 games should.

Not sure that is appropriate

Andrew Sullivan found a site that compiles religious imagery that is a little more, um, revealing than you would generally suspect from a church. Find out more HERE. Happy Sunday!

I can say that I didn't see this at the Twins game I went to, but it is awesome none the less. Fast forward to 2:30 for the good stuff.

Summer time

Jon had the cool idea of putting together a summer mix when the weather started to get nice, so I decided to copy him and make my own mix of free MP3's to help soundtrack your forays our of the house to enjoy this beautiful weather. Check out my mix HERE and Jon's mix HERE.

Tobacco "Sweat Mother"

Head over to Reviler to listen to the rollicking electro jam "Sweat Mother" by Black Moth Super Rainbow frontman Tobacco.

Eight Times?

Larry King just got divorced for the eighth time...yep, you read that right, eight. Really, if I fail at something five times or more, I generally admit to myself it isn't my thing and move on with my life, but apparently I am just a quitter. I am sure old Larry just keeps thinking the next lady he meets in a hotel bar is going to be "the one." At least we don't let gay couples committed to each other for 30 years to marry, right? That would really ruin the sanctimony of marriage.

Gaslight Anthem "American Slang"

Listen to the latest, um, anthem, from the Gaslight Anthem off their upcoming LP. The song is titled "American Slang" and is pretty good, although not as good as the best songs from their '59 Sound LP. Check it out over at Reviler.

Hold Steady April Fools

We tried an April Fools Day post over at Reviler. It was supposed to be a new Hold Steady song, but I'm not sure that anyone really fell for it. If you want to listen to Alf doing "Melmac Rock," head over to Reviler RIGHT NOW!

No Rain

In addition to being a great song, the title of this post is my current mantra for the day. Lets go Twins and lets stay dry!

This is Happening!

Already being blown away by the new albums by Woods, Holy Fuck, Plants and Animals, Dum Dum Girls and Gayngs. Now I have to digest the new LCD Soundsystem and Broken Social Scene. Hold Steady and the National should be coming soon. Wowza.

Go Twins!

New stadium. Sunny day. 6-2 record.

Summer is looking good. Can't wait for Wednesday!

Private Dancer Alive in High Five Review

I inadvertently jumped the gun with my review of the new Private Dancer album Alive in High Five (it doesn't drop for a few months still), but that doesn't take away from the fact that it is another solid album from one of my favorite local bands. Check out the review HERE and keep an eye out for more announcements as the street date becomes closer.

Gogol Bordello "Pala Tute"

Listen to this song from these crazy gypsy punks over at Reviler. If you like it at all, try to scoop up a ticket for their show at the end of next month at First Avenue and by all accounts you won't be disappointed.

Head over to Reviler to hear a classic house banger from one of the best around right now, the DFA affiliated Juan Maclean, who is putting out the latest installment of the DJ-Kicks series.

Pure Ecstasy

Listen to two excellent songs from the newish band Pure Ecstasy over at Reviler. I am hoping they will get the attention they deserve and also have my fingers crossed that a tour will bring them our way very soon.

Beauty in a cesspool

Interesting story about a jesus statue in Montana that a guy made after his wife was cured of cancer. The top photo is the statue and the bottom is a view from inside of the statue, overlooking a toxic waste dump that they have to keep birds away from because they will die if they come in contact with it.

New and Improved Twin Cities Venue Guide

Jon did an awesome job of putting together our top notch Twin Cities Venue Guide over at Reviler, which will let you find out a little but more about all of the great places to catch live music in Minneapolis/St. Paul. Check it out HERE.

Drunk Girls

Listen to the new LCD Soundsytem jam "Drunk Girls" from his upcoming LP3, which is easily one of my most anticipated albums of the year. Read more about what I think of the track over at Reviler.

Brace Yourself

Sarah Palin and Michelle Bachmann are doing a rally/fundraiser tomorrow at the Convention Center. (Insert Joke Here).

Dating in a nutshell

Lollapalooza

Lollapolooza lineup was finally announced today....pretty standard stuff. For some reason I have never wanted to go to Lollapalooza, but I am not sure why. I mean, the lineup is awesome, it just seems like too much and too big. I don't know. I imagine I would like it if I went, but who knows. Check out the full lineup HERE.

Joanna Newsom Have One on Me

Read my review of the excellent new album, Have One On Me, from Joanna Newsom. The 3 LP set is as sprawling and unorthodox as you would expect, and may be the best album she has done yet. Read the review over at Reviler.

Gorillaz Plastic Beach Review

Read my review, plus the reviews of 3 other fine people, regarding the latest album from the cartoon supergroup Gorillaz. The review can be found over at Reviler.

RUN DMT "Spruce Bringsteen"

Listen to the funked out dreamwave track "Spruce Bringsteen" by buzz band RUN DMT over at Reviler. In addition to having a mind blowingly awesome title, it is a pretty solid song.

Communist Daughter Soundtrack to the End Review

If you listen to 89.3, then you have heard Communist Daughter. If you avoid the echo chamber of the Current, do yourself a favor and check out this great new band (featuring TC music vets). My review is up over at Reviler.

Dante and the Lobster + Private Dancer Review

Read my review and watch some vids from the awesome Dante and the Lobster + Private Dancer show a little while back at Nick and Eddies in Minneapolis. It unfortunatly was one of the last (maybe the last) show with the origional D& tL lineup before they parted ways.

File Under: Can't Make It Up

When this is who you are arguing with, it makes sensible debate pretty challenging.

A Place to Bury Stranger + Big Pink

Adam has some cool photos (including above) and I grabbed some vids and wrote a few words about the A Place to Bury Strangers and Big Pink show at First Avenue last week. Check it out at Reviler.
