Thermals review

My review of the Thermals show Sunday night is up over at Culture Bully. After the mellow Neko Case show, the Thermals provided a great spark that was needed to keep me awake and played a really great show. Check out the review for some great pics from new CB photag Adam Bubolz (including the shot above).

Cymbals Eat Guitars
I wrote a review of the amazing new Cymbals Eat Guitars song "And the Hazy Sea," from their debut record Why There Are Mountains. Check out Culture Bully for a free MP3 of the track, which is highly recommended for any fans of NW 90's indie rock....or good music.
Peter Bjorn and John & Chairlift Review

My review of last weeks Peter Bjorn and John show with Chairlift is up over at Culture Bully. Although PB & J were a let down, Chairlift played a pretty good set that really brought their debut LP, Does You Inspire You, to life.
Sonic Youth
Some cools news out of More Cowbell land. Sonic Youth, who will be supporting their 15th (!) LP The Eternal, will be coming to First Ave on July 21st. Should be a great show.

Backyard Tire Fire

Backyard Tire Fire played a great 100 minute set Thursday night to a small but dedicated crowd at the 7th Street Entry. The band, with its powerful 2 guitar attack and a strong rhythm section, played material from their back catalog (including a few requests) and also played some songs from their upcoming album, which by the sounds of the songs will be great. The two covers they played, "Lawyers, Guns and Money" by Warren Zevon and "Cinnamon Girl" by Neil Young showed the band at their best, playing loose yet powerful Americana rock and roll. They ended their set with a stinging take on their song "How in the Hell Did You Get Back Here," which prompted the crowd to scream and cheer until the band finally said they would play one more song. While I hate pre-planned encores with a passion, seeing a band play such a great show and have the small crowd scream and cheer out of appreciation made their seemingly impromptu one song encore (the previously mentioned "Cinnamon Girl") even better, and capped off a great show.

Backyard Tire Fire TONIGHT!
Backyard Tire Fire will be coming to the 7th Street Entry tonight for what should be a great show tonight behind their excellent Places We Lived LP.

Great Lake Swimmers tonight @ 7th Street Entry
The Canadian folk band Great lake Swimmers will be playing a show tonight at the 7th Street Entry. I would like to go, but will do the smart thing and get some rest and try to beat my cold so I can be ready for my 7 shows in 4 day run that starts tomorrow with the awesome Backyard Tire Fire.
Doves 4 takes
The Culture Bully Four Takes on the Doves Kingdom of Rust is up now. The album didn't do much for me, but The Doves have always been a band that I don't seem to fully get (at least compared to a lot of people who love them).

Sunset Rubdown
The red headed step child of the Wolf Parade songwriting team (in my eyes only....which isn't totally fair since I am a fanboy for Dan) will be returning with a new album and a tour. Spener Krug, with his pretty great band Sunset Rubdown, will be touring behind their upcoming release Dragonslayer when they stop at the 7th Street Entry on July 6th.

Jason Isbell Tonight @ Turf Club
Jason Isbell, formerlly of the Drive By Truckers, will be playing what should be a great show tonight at the Turf Club with Justin Townes Earle. Isbell has released two solo albums, both of which have been really solid, and he still apparently still plays some old DBT classics like "Outfit," which is above, with his new songs.
King Khan "What Is?!"
My short write up of the 2007 King Khan record What Is?! is up over at Culture Bully. The label was nice enough to let the site stream the disc, so if you have not heard this amazing band, head over to Culture Bully and check out (and then buy) this great album.
Rosebuds & Megafaun
Another Rosebuds & Megafaun show, another great night. These bands, who rolled through town last year at the Turf Club, are two of the most fun bands to see together that I have found. Last Friday they stopped by the Whole Music Club at the U of M for a show I reviewed HERE with some more great pics from Jon.

Dr. Dog and the Cave Singer @ 400 Bar
Dr. Dog, one of my favorite bands, played a great show Saturday night with the Cave Singers at a very sold out 400 Bar. While the crowd was pretty annoying up front (they obvisouly didn't read THIS), the show was solid start to finish. My review is now up at Culture Bully with some great pics from Jon (including the one above).
Frightened Rabbit

My short take on the Frightened Rabbit live album Liver! Lung! FR! is up over at Culture Bully. Check it out for some Free MP3's from the album.

Bruno
I have loved all things Sasha Baron Cohen for many years, so after many months of seeing bits and pieces leak out, I was very excited to see the Bruno trailer finally come to life. I have to admit I was a little disappointed it was premiered soul sucking Myspace, but maybe I just long for the days when we watched the HBO series and didn't have to go to the bars and hear every drunk douche bag quoting Borat (and soon to be Bruno). I am a little worried that the people he is making fun of will pack theatres are now becoming his targeted audience, but that is neither here nor there. All worries were put on the back burner when I watched the hilarious trailer a few times in a row last night. No matter how popular he becomes, he still is a genius in my book and I am very excited to see this movie. Check out the trailer HERE at the great local site Switchblade Comb.
"Get Yo Shit"
Black Joe Lewis and the Honeybears, a great retro Rock and Soul outfit, have recently released their major label debut Tell Them What Your Name Is!. I profiled a couple of the songs over at Culture Bully. Check out the story along with some great MP3's from the album.

Tallest Man on Earth TONIGHT! @ Turf Club
The Tallest Man on Earth is one man band Kristian Matsson from Sweden, and he is an amazing folk singer. Tonight, he brings the songs from his stunning debut album Shallow Grave to the Turf Club for a show that should not be missed. Highly Recommended.
Solid Gold/Yer Cronies @ Turf Club
Solid Gold and Yer Cronies, two of the best young bands in the Twin Cities, will be playing together tomorrow night at the Turf Club along with great new local band Switzerlind. You can buy tickets online at the Turf Clubs website..and it probably would be a good idea as this one will most likely sell out. The video above was unearthed by Solace and finds Solid Gold in their, um, developing stage. Needless to say, they have changed their look a little bit...but I will let you see that for yourselves tomorrow night.

I can't bash Iowa for being more backwards than Minnesota anymore.
